FF- Machining Turning Operator CTOP

The Machining - Turning: Operator course is a hands-on course where you will learn the fundamentals of using a lathe in a manufacturing environment. You will learn facing, turning, drilling, turning angles, work holding concepts and devices, and other operations as well as conversational programming and basic CNC program editing. Instruction will also include applicable shop safety, precision measurement, and how to interpret drawings including dimensioning and tolerances.

Students completing the course will sit for the NIMS (National Institute of Metalworking Skills) credentials:
  • CNC Turning: Operator, Level 1
  • Turning Operations: Turning Between Centers
  • Turning Operations: Turning Chucking Skills

  • NIMS' first time registration fee and exam cost
  • All materials needed for turning: including metals, lubricants, cutting tools and similar
  • Tooling-U online access
  • Steel-toed boots or shoes recommended. Estimated cost: $40.00
  • Safety glasses wit hside shields. Estimated cost: $10.00
  • Basic calculator. Estimated cost: $10.00
  • Prerequisite - Machining Fundamentals I and II (or pass VWCC Workforce test)
  • All students must be 18 years old
  • We require a pre-acceptance screening assessment with our VWCC Testing Center. Contact our Student Services group for more information at
  • Admission Requirements: Applicants must meet the requirements of the VWCC Placement Testing Center: ENF 3, ENG 111 and MTE 1-3 (Reading, English and Math, respectively)
