Virginia Western Community College partners with Mountain Gateway Community College to deliver this program. MGCC's certified CDL instructors provide all classroom instruction, online curriculum, and behind-the-wheel training. This comprehensive program prepares you to obtain your Class A CDL through a flexible, step-by-step approach combining online learning with hands-on training. VWCC offers flexible scheduling and training options designed to fit your needs. Our programs range from 30 days to 6 months, allowing you to choose the pace that works best for your schedule and goals

Program Structure:

Step 1: Orientation (8 hours, in-person)
Start with a full-day session covering the CDL program overview, vehicle inspection demonstrations, and what to expect throughout your training.

Step 2: Online Curriculum (32 hours, self-paced)
Complete state-approved online modules within 45 days, covering:
  • Basic Operation & Safe Operating Procedures
  • Advanced Operating Practices
  • Vehicle Systems & Reporting Malfunctions
  • Hours of Service & Hazardous Materials

Step 4: Behind-the-Wheel Training (80 hours)
The student must secure a valid Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) and satisfy all the course objectives before scheduling a state-administered skills test using a MGCC vocational vehicle.
Schedule hands-on instruction with experienced MGCC instructors:
  • 40 hours: Vehicle Inspections & Basic Vehicle Control (Range)
  • 40 hours: On-Road Driving
Flexible scheduling is available weekdays, evenings, and weekends throughout the 6-month program.
